Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means 'aquaintance with letters'. It comes from the Latin word for letter: littera, and so the academic study of literature is known as "Letters".

One of the earliest known examples of literature is the epic poem, Epic of Gilgamesh, which is dated around c. 2700 BC. It deals with themes of heroism, friendship, loss and the quest for eternal life.
