Webber With A Cause

The internet today has moved beyond simply being a passive repository of knowledge and a means of communication to a pro-active tool for activism with a potentially positive impact on the social sphere for which it finds relevance. This social sphere manifests iteslf in both the virtual and real worlds, using the internet as a means of connecting with like-minded individuals and translating this connection to positive action that can be accomplished in the real world.

As my personal project, I plan to use what I learn in CompSci111G to promote my personal advocacies, namely:

  • HIV awareness and sexual responsibility, particularly for implementation in high-risk communities like the LGBT community in my home country, the Philippines.
  • Systemic Racism awareness and education of both victims and propagators

Fighting HIV in the Philippines

While the rest of the world has begun to manage what used to be a pandemic, the Philippines is one of only seven countries where HIV infection rates has increased by more than 25%. To make the issue more alerting, Infections now occur at a younger age (20-29 years old) through unprotected sex and drug-use. And of the high-risk groups, only a few take HIV tests with the number at 0 for those under 18 years of age.
