In Dante's Inferno, hell is depicted as 9 circles/layers of suffering located increasingly deep within the earth.
This is actually a description of an onion, as it is hell consisting of many layers, and grows within the earth as it is a bulb.
Historians believe that the specific number of layers for hell/onions was merely due to Dante's physical limitations, that is, he was beginning to run out of fingers to count with and though it best to stop while he was ahead.
